School Travel Tracker Challenge
Twenty-two primary school classes from 1st-6th class in St.Mary’s, Scoil Mhuire, Scoil Gharbhain and St.Joseph’s are taking part in the Go School Smart Travel Challenge from Monday 25th November –Friday 6th December that is being coordinated by Go Dungarvan and Waterford Sports Partnership.
This challenge aims to encourage participants to shift from using the private car for the school journey to using sustainable “Smarter Travel” including walking, cycling, carpooling, park n’stride and riding the bus. Each class taking part was given a “School Travel Tracker” to record the number of students in the class travelling by each form of transport every day. Two versions of the School Travel Tracker are being piloted for this challenge, including a laminated paper tracker and a wipe clean magnetic tracker with stick-on travel icons. Both trackers are reusable so that classes taking part can continue to use them after the challenge and encourage long term behaviour change. During the challenge, students are awarded one point for each sustainable transport journey to school. Those living within 2km are encouraged to walk or cycle if possible and those living further away are encouraged to carpool, park n’stride or travel by bus. Teachers will be giving out spot prizes throughout the challenge and students will get to enter into a raffle for additional prizes on the days that they choose Smarter Travel modes. At the end of each week, classes will calculate their Smarter Travel Score by adding up the number of sustainable transport journeys throughout the week. The class with the highest average Smarter Travel Score will win a special prize at the end of the two week challenge!
Good luck to all taking part and remember;Â your school , your town, your move!
